Welcome to Videos for Patients,

producers of a video series that gives the essential information on medical conditions.
The idea behind the series of videos came to John Cleese when he began to notice something about his consultations with doctors. He found, after he got home, that he couldn’t recall everything

the doctor had told him. There were always questions he wished he’d asked......but hadn’t.  Asking around his friends, he discovered that everyone had had the same experience. People are always anxious arriving for consultations. We are even more anxious a few minutes later if we hear a positive diagnosis. Ironically, our anxiety makes this the worst possible moment for us to take in and remember the information that our doctor now gives us. No wonder doctors so often have to repeat their explanations at a later re-consultation.

John Cleese has set up Videos for Patients to help improve this situation. Every video is written and presented by Dr Rob Buckman, after being checked by two independent and established authorities in the field, one of whom later supervises the video recording.

Each video is introduced by a brief sketch with Buckman and Cleese, illustrating the difficulties sometimes experienced by patients during consultation. Thereafter Buckman presents the medical facts, clearly and without using medical jargon, using the power of film both to communicate and to reassure. On issues of particular concern to women, Dr Miriam Stoppard joins Dr Buckman. When all the essential information has been put across, Cleese briefly rejoins Buckman, asking questions which serve to emphasise the key points.

This means that patients can get the information they need by watching a video with their families and carers in the reassuring atmosphere of their own home. Also they are encouraged throughout the video to replay any parts they have not understood first time. And finally, they are urged to write down any questions they would like to ask their doctor on their next visit.

These videos help communication between doctors and patients and have been proven to greatly reduce unnecessary re -consultations.
